Teacher Julie climbs Mount Olympus An Ellesmere teacher who took on a challenge to complete two summits of a legendary Greek mountain has raised almost £1,000. Julie Kirk, Support for Learning Teacher at Ellesmere College, trekked through Northern Greece to climb two peaks of the legendary Mount Olympus to raise money for local children and families. Despite reaching 2,100m, the team were prevented attempting the final 800m push to the summits by heavy snow and severe avalanche risks - something Julie said was very unfortunate as it is extremely unusual conditions at this time of year. “It was an incredible occasion and I am so pleased I was able to support Hope House with the challenge,” Julie said. “Ellesmere College supported me with time off and I spent a lot of time in training, getting ready to climb two summits was a challenge but when it was happening, a lot of adrenaline got me through as well. “I was delighted to be able to do something to support others and the work of the children’s hospices, helping them continue to provide the vital care and support they offer to children, young people, and families across our community.” The dedicated staff member is known for her commitment to fundraising for Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith, having previously organised Ellesmere College’s annual Classic Car Rally, which ran alongside the Art Exhibition and raised around £5,000 per event for the charity. Julie added: “Since moving part time I was unable to continue organising the Classic Car Rally so I started looking for a new way to support Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith’s important work. “When the opportunity to take part in the Mount Olympus trek arose, I knew it would be the perfect way to continue my fundraising efforts while embracing a new challenge.” Stephen Mullock, Deputy Head External Relations at Ellesmere College, said: “We are all incredibly proud of Julie and this great achievement, for such a wonderful cause. “Her determination, generosity, and commitment to supporting others are truly inspiring. “Ellesmere College is proud to have her as a member of staff and grateful for the difference her fundraising will make to Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith.” Support Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith If you'd like to take on a trek like Julie to help support us, we have a number of events and initiatives you can get involved in, such as out Mount Kilimanjaro Trek in 2028!
