One of our lucky supporters was blown away when she scooped £1,000 playing one of our scratchcards.

Steph Murray and husband Noel had popped into the city to visit a travel agent to finalise arrangements for a holiday when luck struck.

Rare visit

“We hardly ever come into Chester,” said Steph, of Ellesmere Port.

“We were heading towards our favourite café in Handbridge, when I thought we would have a quick look in the Hope House shop on the way.

“A lady on duty in the store asked us if we’d like to buy one of their scratchcards, so on the spur of the moment we bought a couple, popped them in my handbag and went off for lunch thinking nothing of it,” continued Steph.

Couldn’t believe it

Whilst enjoying a break at the Brown Sugar Café, the couple remembered about the scratchcards and scratched off one each – and Steph realised she’d got very lucky!

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

“I told Noel I’d matched three numbers and that I thought I’d won £1,000.

“He replied, ‘yeah, right.’

“I gave the ticket to him to check and even then, he said there’ll be a catch

“We’ve never won anything before and don’t even play the National Lottery,” said Steph.

The couple took their lucky ticket back to the shop to check it – where they were met by ecstatic staff once the news was confirmed.

Volunteer

The lucky card was sold to them by June, our volunteer who sells raffle and lottery tickets there three days a week.

June said: “I recall them coming back in, a lovely couple, very friendly.

“They asked me to check the ticket as they couldn’t believe their eyes.

“I told them that they’d won £1,000 and could see the shock in their faces.

“I was over the moon for them. I’d never sold a jackpot scratchcard before either.”

Excited staff

Steph shared: “The staff were very excited and congratulating us, we were so shocked.”

Our scratchcards and weekly lottery draw cost just £1 to play and raise around £1.4million of the £10million we need to provide specialist nursing care and support to more than 750 children, and their families, who live in Shropshire, Cheshire, and across Wales.
